The best bang for the buck —
Research indicates that one of the best ways to reduce crime is through police-community partnerships. From a cost-benefit perspective, the strategy has the biggest bang for the buck. We see a lot of fissures in the news concerning police-community partnerships, but I know that here in Des Moines, Iowa USA, our police department does an exceptional job of connecting with communities. We even have a name for it: “The Des Moines Way.”

Our police have special units for mental health issues, apartment complexes, neighborhoods and more. August 1st is National Night Out. As a board member of my local neighborhood association, I have no doubt I’ll have a chance to shake the hand of our chief of police and thank him for his service and dedication to the community. I hope everybody reading this will participate in their local National Night Out event.
