Exiting the Louvre

Exiting the Louvre is no easy task. There are lots of videos explaining how to get in, but there seems to be nothing about getting out. After a day of viewing art, you are likely disorientated and need a few simple tips to exit.

Protect Yourself Against Pickpockets

Use your situational awareness, act like you know what you’re doing, walk with confidence and keep your valuables in front of you.

Getting Out

The only way to exit is to get down to the -2 Floor. That’s the huge open room underneath the above-ground pyramid.

The Louvre is much, much bigger than you think. Walk in the correct direction and landmarks will appear.

To get your bearings. say to an official, “sortie?” (pr. sort-ee). It’s the word for exit. It doesn’t matter how you pronounce it, just say it.

To get out, you have to stay underground and exit the giant room. The official will point you in the direction of a second, upside-down pyramid, that might not be immediately visible. As you get closer, you can’t miss it. It extends from the ceiling into the room.

When you arrive at the upside-down pyramid, you have two choices. Either keep going straight or turn right.

Most Direct Way Out

The most direct way out is to keep walking straight ahead. It’s a long walk, but in the distance, you will see Greek statues standing against a portion of the old city wall.

On either side of those Greek statues are stairs two-flights up that will take you to the Carrousel arch near the Louvre sculpture garden. Hands Down – IA-03 – 15s (youtube.com)

The Longer Way Out

Instead of going straight when you arrive at the upside-down pyramid, turn to the right. This takes you through the underground mall. The walk is very, very long. You will take a few escalators up, but you will stay underground all the way to the to exit at 99 Rue de Rivoli. 99 Rue de Rivoli – Google Maps
